Billie Eilish’s Debut Single, “Ocean Eyes” Turns 10 Today

Billie Eilish’s breakout single “Ocean Eyes” officially turns 10, marking a decade since the track first appeared on SoundCloud and began her ascent from an unknown Los Angeles teenager to a global pop figure.

Released in November 2015, the song was originally written by her brother Finneas O’Connell. At the time, Eilish was 13 and had recorded the track for her dance teacher; the upload was not intended as a commercial release. Despite that, the song quickly gained traction online, picking up attention from music blogs, YouTube channels, and eventually major labels.

In the years following its release, the track became a key reference point for new artists and producers drawn to its unique style. “Ocean Eyes” had a large part in shifting mainstream pop in the late 2010s.

Finneas via instagram: “This song has changed our lives inch by inch for 10 years straight- from 18 to 28 and 13 to 23, I could not be more proud of Billie or of the work we’ve done together.”
