Colin ‘Smiley’ Petersen, the first drummer of the Bee Gees who helped shape the sound of some of their most iconic early hits, has passed away at the age of 78. His current band, Best of The Bee Gees, announced the sad news on Nov. 18 in a heartfelt Facebook post, writing

He enriched our lives and bound our group with love, care, and respect. Not sure how we can go on without his glowing smile and deep friendship. We love you, Col. Rest in Peace.”

Petersen joined Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb in 1966 as the Bee Gees transitioned from Australia to London. His dynamic drumming was featured on the group’s 1966 album Spicks and Specks. His contribution continued as they rose to global fame with four albums under Polydor/Atco. Highlights of his career with the Bee Gees include iconic tracks like “New York Mining Disaster 1941,” “To Love Somebody,” “I’ve Gotta Get a Message to You,” and “I Started a Joke.”

His contributions shaped the band’s sound during a pivotal era, particularly on albums such as Bee Gees’ 1st (1967), Horizontal (1968), Idea (1968), and Odessa (1969). His final work with the band came on 1970’s Cucumber Castle, before parting ways due to managerial disagreements with Robert Stigwood.

Following his departure from the Bee Gees, Petersen formed Humpy Bong with Jonathan Kelly and Tim Staffell, exploring new musical directions. Although the band was short-lived, it marked a creative chapter in his career. Petersen later pivoted to management, founding a company with his wife, Joanne Newfield, in 1969. Together, they raised two sons, Jaime and Ben.

Fans and peers remember Petersen not only for his contributions to music but also for his warmth and kindness. His impact on the Bee Gees’ formative years remains an essential part of their legacy, helping set the stage for their transformation into one of the most celebrated groups in music history.

As his bandmates in Best of The Bee Gees expressed, “Colin’s glowing smile and deep friendship will always be remembered.”
