After a furious altercation during a game in Puerto Rico led to DeMarcus Cousins’ suspension and contract termination, his professional basketball career has entered yet another troubling chapter. The 34-year-old former NBA All-Star was involved in a chaotic scene involving fans, explicit behavior, and an on-court outburst while he was playing for the Mets de Guaynabo in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN).
Cousins got into a heated argument with courtside spectators during a game on June 9. He seems to be making a vulgar gesture in the video, which involves his genital area, and then pressing his hand provocatively close to a fan’s face. The crowd instantly grew outraged at what was happening. When Cousins grabbed a fan’s arm, he was automatically ejected for his second technical foul of the evening.
Things escalated quickly as he walked off the court. While heading into the locker room, Cousins exchanged more words with fans before drinks were dumped on him. That triggered a full-blown confrontation, with Cousins trying to break free from his teammates and staff to retaliate.
As a result of the incident, the Baloncesto Superior Nacional suspended Cousins for the remainder of the season and issued a $4,250 fine. The league noted the punishment was due to a “disqualifying foul, a technical foul, and acts that incite violence or provocation.” Cousins could face an additional $5,750 fine unless he can provide a valid reason to reduce the penalty. The Mets de Guaynabo also terminated his contract immediately after the altercation, releasing a statement emphasizing their commitment to safety and sportsmanship.
“This franchise strongly condemns any form of violence or provocation,” the team said. “Respect and professionalism are non-negotiable.”
Cousins was averaging 18.2 points and nine rebounds in his second BSN season. He had previously helped the Mets reach the semifinals in 2023.Once a dominant NBA force, Cousins played 11 seasons in the league, earning four All-Star nods and averaging 19.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. After his NBA tenure, he also had stints in Taiwan and Mongolia.
This latest episode generates serious doubt on whether Cousins will get another chance in professional basketball—anywhere.
