Do Artists Have to be Likable to Find Success?

In previous decades, fans had small interactions with their favorite artists. They would hear their interviews on the radio stations and television. A polished version of themselves with practiced answers and a clear persona embodied for the world to see. Nowadays, artists go on live, comment on videos, and post tweets from the comfort of their own homes in opposition of their public relation representatives. The gap between artists and their fan base continues to wither as fans find their favs relatable, authentic, and sometimes problematic. Yet, some can wonder, does it matter if you personally like the artist if you love the music?

Ariana Grande has been in the public eye for over a decade, acting in iconic films such as Wicked and releasing award winning albums like Sweetener. However some, despite enjoying her music, argue that Grande is often on the troublesome side of drama. Recently, Grande received backlash from the public and fans alike for “being a homewrecker,” in reference to her alleged affair with her Wicked co-star, Ethan Slater. At the time, Slater’s now ex-wife was expecting their first child. Both Grande and Slater have avoided or denied the affair allegations. Nevertheless, many believe Grande has a pattern of this behavior, with her song “break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored,” expressing the temptation. Yet, “Arianators,” and the average listener continue to support Grande in new endeavors.

Artist Ye, previously known as Kanye, came under scrutiny at the 2009 MTV VMA’s for disrespecting the 19-year-old Taylor Swift during her acceptance speech. Despite this inappropriate encounter, Ye received praise for his music and remained successful. In recent years, Ye has been under fire for continuous anti-semetic remarks. Although some may outwardly disapprove of his actions, they also listen to his music behind doors. Creating a sense of shame in public and solitude internally.

On the other hand, singer Ross Lynch has gone viral numerous times on TikTok. Edits can be shown of him on stage, in interviews, and in Troye Sivan’s music video, “One of Your Girls.” The comments are filled with compliments, exclaiming how good looking Lynch is. Contrastly, other commenters point out that the edits never contain music from the set or his actual songs. One commenter stated, “ I don’t know one Ross Lynch song but Jesus.” Expressing that viewers are only interested in the singer’s appearance and not his looks.

Music is always connected to the artist, no matter how much people attempt to believe otherwise. The rising access between artists and fans magnifies all that we love and hate about are favs. The problematic nature of some in the industry highlight that many do not care about moral obligations when it comes to music. Instead the value is intricately assigned to appearance, a loyal fanbase, good music, and a bit of charisma. If your music is deemed good, you’re attractive, and charming; the general public will continue to support you regardless of your actions.
