From Legacy to Leadership: The Sykut Era Begins at Elon

The Elon University men’s tennis team is entering a new era under the leadership of head coach Maciek Sykut, who took over after longtime coach Michael Leonard retired last spring. Sykut, honored to lead the Phoenix, knows he has big shoes to fill as Leonard was the winningest coach in program history.

Elon’s roster stability has been a promising sign for the program’s future. Despite Leonard’s departure, all eligible players chose to return, showcasing the strong culture and sense of community within the team. Junior Oskar Antinheimo, who never considered leaving, praised both Leonard’s legacy and Sykut’s smooth transition into the head coach role.

Experience Meets Ambition: Sykut’s Vision Drives Elon Toward CAA Championship Goals

Sykut brings a wealth of experience from coaching at Duke, Arizona, and NC State, along with an impressive playing career at Florida State and on the ATP Tour. His emphasis on hard work, technical improvement, and building genuine relationships has already made a positive impact. Antinheimo highlighted Sykut’s focus on toughness and consistency, mirroring Leonard’s approach.

The Phoenix, featuring a mix of returning talent and promising freshmen, have their sights set on competing for the CAA Championship this season. Elon will host the conference tournament at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in April, adding extra motivation for the team to capture the title on home courts.

While the spring season started with a few tough losses, Sykut and his players remain optimistic. With a strong culture, veteran leadership, and fresh energy from new recruits, Elon is ready to rise to the occasion and make the most of this transitional season.
