From Mound to Plate: Ohtani Returns in Two-Way Comeback

After nearly two years away from pitching, Shohei Ohtani returned to the mound in electrifying fashion Monday night, making his first two-way appearance since 2023. In front of a sold-out crowd of more than 53,000 at Dodger Stadium, the reigning MVP not only started the game as a pitcher for the Dodgers but also served as their designated hitter, marking a major milestone in his return from Tommy John surgery.

Ohtani, who signed a record-setting 10-year, $700 million deal with the Dodgers in 2023, tossed one inning and threw 28 pitches. His fastball unexpectedly touched 100 mph—higher than he intended—causing both excitement and a bit of concern from Dodgers staff aiming to ease him back into action. Despite surrendering a run on two soft singles and a sacrifice fly, Ohtani’s return was a symbolic victory. He showed flashes of his dominant form, while also recognizing areas for improvement, particularly with his command.

His manager, Dave Roberts, called the moment “bananas,” admitting he was “fanboying” watching Ohtani seamlessly transition from pitcher to hitter. After his inning on the mound, Ohtani grabbed his bat and promptly tied the game with an opposite-field double. He added an RBI single in the fourth inning, helping the Dodgers to a 6-3 win over the Padres.

The plan is for Ohtani to pitch every six to eight days, gradually increasing his workload by an inning at a time. He will continue to hit regularly, though the team is being cautious not to overextend him too soon.

Ohtani, 30, last pitched in August 2023 before injuring his elbow for a second time, which required surgery. A labrum tear in his non-throwing shoulder also delayed his return earlier this year, making Monday’s appearance even more significant.

While the outing was short, it marked the official comeback of baseball’s most unique player. “I’m just grateful to be back,” Ohtani said. “This is only the beginning.” With his two-way abilities back on display, the Dodgers and their fans got a glimpse of what they hope will be a dominant second chapter.
