“H2O: Just Add Water” retains its relevance nearly a decade after its first episode aired

The beloved Australian TV series and cultural phenomenon defined the childhoods of millions worldwide in more than 120 countries.

“H2O: Just Add Water” tells the story of three teenage girls who are magically transformed into mermaids one night when they discover a mysterious body of water bathed in moonlight.

The morning after their metamorphosis, Cleo, Emma and Rikki discover that they transform into mermaids whenever they come in contact with water.

Throughout the three seasons and 78 episodes, the girls revel in their newfound powers and mermaid abilities while also sacrificing normal teenage things, as they battle to keep their secret from the world around them.

The series focuses on the girls’ bond with each other and their close friend, Lewis, as they navigate their new reality.

“H2O: Just Add Water” is the ultimate coming-of-age story, filled with compelling tales (and tails) of friendship, love and sacrifice.

For tens of millions of women and girls, the series inspired us to play mermaids in the pool and beg our parents for mermaid tails. It popularized phrases like “aur naur Cleorr,” also known as “oh no Cleo” and made traveling to the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia the ideal vacation for fans of the series.

The TV series’ cult following often visits its filming locations, such as the JuiceNet Café (the Gold Coast Game Fish Club), the Marine Park (SeaWorld), South Coast High (Somerset College) and the characters’ houses on the Gold Coast.

While Mako Island, where the girls got their powers from, is a fictitious island, filming took place on the beaches along the Gold Coast and at Tallebudgera Creek.

The hit TV series ran from July 2006 to April 2010 and quickly became a massive success with over 250 million viewers across the globe.

Its international success led to the creation of two spinoffs series, “Mako Mermaids” and “H2O: Mermaid Adventures”, by Jonathan M. Shiff, the creator of the original series.

“Mako Mermaids” is set in the same universe as the original series and even features an appearance from Rikki, played by Cariba Heine. The animated series, “H2O: Mermaid Adventures” is a retelling of the original series, intended for a younger audience.

There’s no official talk of a sequel or a reunion episode, but that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating and creating their own plotlines for the esteemed series’ potential return.
