Mariah Carey fans have been waiting forever for this: her long-lost alt-rock album Someone’s Ugly Daughter might finally see the light of day. Yep, the same one she recorded back in 1995 while also working on her iconic Daydream album.
Now that she’s been nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the timing couldn’t be more perfect.
In a new interview with the Associated Press, Mariah said she’s down to release the project—but in true Mariah fashion, she wants to go big: “I really want to [release it], but I want to do videos, and I have just so many ideas for that.” She added that it probably won’t be ready before this summer’s Rock Hall ceremony, but hinted that a few songs could still drop soon. 👀
As for the nomination itself? She’s staying humble: “That’s a huge honor… I don’t know if I’m going to win it, so I don’t want to get too excited… I guess I didn’t expect it. And here we are.”
Quick throwback—Mariah originally talked about the grunge album in her 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, where she said she created it with her band as a way to blow off steam during Daydream. She ended up releasing it under a fake band name, Chick, with her friend Clarissa Dane doing vocals. But the original version with Mariah’s own vocals? That one stayed locked away.
Well… until recently. She told Rolling Stone back in 2020 that she found the original tapes and teased that a new version might be coming—with another artist possibly jumping on the project too. “I’m just full of surprises,” she said. Classic.
The 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees will be announced later this month, with the ceremony happening in L.A. this fall.
So yeah—Mariah in the Rock Hall and a long-lost grunge album? It’s a great time to be a Lamb.
