NAACP Image Awards 2026

The 57th annual NAACP Image Awards took place this past week at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California, bringing together some of the most influential Black entertainers to honor their outstanding achievements in film, television, music, and culture.

Sinners Dominates the Night

The star of the night was the film Sinners, which has had an enormous amount of success within the past year and received 18 nominations—the most in the event’s history—and won 13 out of the 18, including but not limited to Outstanding Motion Picture.

Michael B. Jordan, who is the heart of the film, won several remarkable awards, including Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture and Entertainer of the Year, which is considered to be the top honor of the night.

Along with Michael B. Jordan, breakout artist from the film Miles Caton won for Outstanding Breakthrough Performance, along with other actors such as Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo, who won awards for their supporting roles. Solidifying Sinners as one of the defining films of the year.

Television Triumphs

There were also many television series that were recognized during the event as well, with the award for Outstanding Comedy Series going to Abbott Elementary and Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series going to Quinta Brunson, who plays Janine in the show, along with other celebrated actors like Angela Bassett and Sterling K. Brown, who took home individual awards for their great performances this past year.

Honoring Legacy and Advocacy

One of the things that make the NAACP Image Awards stand out is the emphasis on honoring the work and legacy of Black creatives in the industry, which could be seen through Viola Davis’ winning of the distinguished Chairman’s Award to honor her illustrious career, creative influence, and advocacy in the industry.

Adding to this legacy was the induction of hip-hop trio Salt-N-Pepa into the NAACP Hall of Fame and Colman Domingo’s winning of the President’s Award for his remarkable efforts in both activism and art.

Turning Pain into Purpose

The evening most definitely did not shy away from addressing certain controversies, as a week before the NAACP Image Awards, at the BAFTA Awards, an audience member with Tourette’s syndrome yelled a racial slur at Delroy Lindo, Michael B. Jordan, and other Black attendees. The situation was addressed by many honorees during the awards, and Lindo and Jordan received a standing ovation during the event, reaffirming why so many Black entertainers come to the NAACP Image Awards every year: to be in an environment that is inclusive, affirming, and understanding.

Looking Forward

All in all, the 2026 NAACP Image Awards verified the event’s purpose is recognition of Black cultural achievement in an industry where it is constantly overlooked. From record-breaking victories to moments of support, the evening gave flowers to the many entertainers who are shaping and carrying the industry.

The NAACP Image Awards once more demonstrated that honoring greatness can be both very significant and inspiring. During a year full of cultural debates and subs, the NAACP Image Awards served as a reminder that Black storytelling influence has and will continue to define the entertainment industry.
