The world has lost a musical legend. Roberta Flack, the Grammy-winning singer whose timeless voice brought us classics like “Killing Me Softly With His Song” and “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” has died at the age of 88. Her passing was confirmed by her representatives, who shared that she died peacefully, surrounded by her family.

Flack’s music was more than just melodies and lyrics—it was an emotional journey. Her songs touched hearts, transcended generations, and left an indelible mark on the world of music. From her soulful ballads to her powerful collaborations, Flack’s artistry was a testament to her passion and dedication.

A Legacy of Music and Love

Born on February 10, 1937, in North Carolina, Roberta Flack grew up surrounded by music. Her father, a church organist, inspired her love for the piano, and by the age of 15, her prodigious talent earned her a scholarship to Howard University. It was there that her musical journey truly began.

Flack’s breakthrough came with “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” a hauntingly beautiful ballad written by Ewan MacColl. The song soared to the top of the charts after being featured in Clint Eastwood’s 1971 film Play Misty for Me, earning Flack two Grammy Awards in 1973.

But it was “Killing Me Softly With His Song” that cemented her place in music history. The song’s raw emotion and Flack’s velvety voice resonated with listeners worldwide. Decades later, the Fugees and Lauryn Hill reintroduced the song to a new generation, with their 1996 cover becoming a global hit.

A Life of Collaboration and Resilience

Flack’s career was marked by incredible collaborations, most notably with Howard University classmate Donny Hathaway. Together, they created magic with hits like “Where Is the Love” and “The Closer I Get to You.” Hathaway’s tragic death in 1979 was a profound loss for Flack, both personally and professionally. Yet, she persevered, teaming up with Peabo Bryson in the 1980s and continuing to create music that touched souls.

Her passion for music extended beyond the stage. In the late 2000s, Flack founded the Roberta Flack School of Music at the Hyde Leadership Charter School in the Bronx. The program provided free music education to underprivileged students, ensuring that her love for music would inspire future generations.

A Voice Silenced Too Soon

In recent years, Flack faced significant health challenges. Diagnosed with ALS in 2022, she could no longer sing, a heartbreaking reality for a woman whose voice had brought so much joy to the world. Yet, even in the face of adversity, Flack remained a beacon of strength and grace.

Her final public performance was in 2018, when she took the stage at a Jazz Foundation of America event. Despite her health struggles, she continued to share her gift with the world, proving that her spirit was as resilient as her voice was powerful.

A Farewell to a Legend

As news of her passing spread, tributes poured in from fellow musicians and fans alike. Carole King called her “one of the greatest soul singers of all time,” while Jennifer Hudson praised her legacy, writing, “Your music lives on!!!”

Roberta Flack’s music was more than just sound—it was a feeling, a memory, a moment in time. Her songs will continue to move us, reminding us of the power of love, loss, and resilience.

Rest in peace, Roberta Flack. Your voice may be silent, but your legacy will forever sing.
