Angela Simmons made quite the impression at the BET Awards 2024, initially looking like she was toting a firearm. However, the eye-catching accessory was actually a glitzy green bag. The businesswoman and reality TV star, who happens to be the daughter of Joseph ‘Rev Run’ Simmons, thought the bag was a perfect addition to her red carpet look. Yet, on Sunday evening, June 30, many were stunned by the sight of it.
On social media, some pointed fingers at Simmons’ longtime partner, rapper and music mogul Yo Gotti, as the influence behind her bold fashion choice. Critics also found the bag in poor taste, especially given that Simmons’ late ex-fiancé and father of her six-year-old son, Sutton Joseph Tennyson, died due to gun violence in 2018.
Addressing the controversy, Angela took to video to set the record straight, stating that she’s “not like that.” “I see a lot of chatter about the bag—the purse I wore to the awards,” she said. “Normally, I don’t respond to rumors, but I’m not like that, never have been. I’m super… like, I’m not violent. I’ve been through a lot personally with gun violence, and it’s very close to me.”
“But I just liked the bag and thought it was cool, a fashion moment,” she continued. “That was it. I didn’t mean to ruffle any feathers. It seems like some people are upset, but I didn’t mean any harm. I’m super peaceful. I’m sorry if it bothered anyone, but that’s not me.”
