TikTok has become the place to be in terms of music. Artists release their music on the platform, hoping for exposure, listener retention, and going viral. Although songs cycle through the app rather quickly, it is beneficial when artists’ songs are used in a trend. Thousands of videos and comments lead to conversation and spreads brand awareness to individuals that may not be reached otherwise. Musicians also get a chance to interact with fans through their own account whether that be through TikTok lives, comments, or video responses. However, going viral is not solely beneficial for up and coming artists.
Music is a way for people to express themselves. The instruments can change, genres can be switched, and songs can change forms. Generally however, the human experience, albeit different for everyone, remains relatively the same. Themes like heartbreak, happiness, grief, insecurities, and the longing for an epic summer are universal. This can explain the phenomena behind songs going viral on TikTok decades after their release. Although many carry songs from their parents, TikTok users are gaining access to songs they have never heard before, all thanks to the easily accessible platform.
Although trends can be thanked for the exposures of the oldies, but goodies, other artists share their rendition of the song through song covers. Unique forms of the same song can spark different emotions and perspectives. Analyzations and collaborative comments encourage others to listen to a song multiple times until they understand all the messages. The timeless songs can also reflect the current state of one’s life or even the world’s climate.
An example of a song going viral in the new century is, “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over, “ by Jeff Buckly released in 1994. Yet, multiple parts of the song have continued to remain popular at various times. Users share their heartbreak and experiences in the comments under the iconic song lyrics. Another example is “Linger,” by The Cranberries released in 1993. The song’s whimsical intro and lighthearted sound made waves throughout TikTok with over 70 thousand videos containing the hashtag, ‘linger’. Despite the playful tone, a deeper analysis of the song reveals the singer is losing herself in the love for another. Lyrics such as, “So why were you holding her hand?” and “you know I’m such a fool for you,” imply the artist is confused and hurt. Feelings that are all too familiar for the listeners engaging with the post.
The growth in listeners has led to a resurgence in new music from artists. The rock band, Bôa, experienced a whirlwind of support from fans after their 1998 hit, “Duvet,” went viral on TikTok. The band decided to release their first album in twenty years, “Whiplash.” The band connected with their fans by making TikTok’s speaking about the success of their old song’s revival and expressing their gratitude. Artist Stevie Nicks, expressed joy when asked about Fleetwood Mac’s song, “Dreams,” resurfacing.
It is safe to say that music will always transcend its release. Through hymns, musical devices, emotions, and words; music brings us all together throughout time. TikTok has just become the most recent platform to explore this phenomenon.
