From working at Chipotle to becoming a Grammy nominated and award winner. Jayla Hickmon also known as Doechii makes history being the third black female rapper to win ‘ The Best Rap Album’ category for her mixtape ‘Alligator Bites Never Heal’ released last year.
The 26-year-old rapper and singer-songwriter is from Tampa, Florida. She was discovered first on TikTok, then later signed to Top Dog Entertainment (TDE). The label that also works with Kendrick Lamar and SZA.
Doechii’s acceptance speech encourages black women to have faith and continue working on themselves even if we don’t fit society’s expectations. She influences black women to embrace our authenticity, which makes it easier to standout. She also addressed her testimony of encountering sobriety and in return being rewarded with God’s blessing.
It takes bravery to sacrifice one’s old life to welcome a brand new one. Congrats to Doechii for her well deserved success!
