Cam Ward’s journey from an overlooked high school quarterback to the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft is a testament to perseverance and talent.
Hailing from West Columbia, Texas, Ward played in a run-heavy Wing T offense at Columbia High School, averaging just 12 pass attempts per game. This limited exposure led to him being unranked by major recruiting services and receiving only one scholarship offer—from the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), an FCS program.
At UIW, Ward quickly made his mark, winning the Jerry Rice Award as the nation’s top FCS freshman in 2020. In 2024, Ward transferred again, this time to the University of Miami. There, he led the Hurricanes to a 10–3 record, amassing 4,313 passing yards and 39 touchdowns. His outstanding performance earned him the ACC Player of the Year award and consensus All-American honors. He also set the Division I career record for touchdown passes with 158. The Tennessee Titans, coming off a 3–14 season, selected Ward with the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
