‘Nobody Wants This’ Cast & Creator Divided Over Adam Brody’s Gaza Remarks

A high-profile rift has emerged among the team behind Netflix’s hit romantic comedy series Nobody Wants This. The friction centers on publicly expressed views by the show’s leading man, Adam Brody, regarding the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Brody, who portrays an open-minded modern rabbi navigating an interfaith romance, spoke out about his personal political beliefs in a major profile, sparking swift and vocal pushback from the show’s creator, key cast members, and cultural advisors.

In a wide-ranging September interview with GQ, Brody reflected on his long-standing background in political engagement, including his hands-on volunteer work with Swing Left, a progressive organization focused on voter turnout in key battleground districts. During the conversation, Brody observed that recent national and global crises, ranging from the pandemic to shifting political dynamics and the ongoing violence in the Middle East, had disrupted his assumption that his industry peers held unified political views. He noted that these events exposed ideological divides he had previously overlooked. While acknowledging that he had largely kept his opinions on the conflict private, Brody chose to make his position explicit during the interview, declaring that he considers the situation in Gaza to be a genocide and stating unequivocally that he supports a free Palestine. He added that he hopes future political leadership in Washington will alter international policies to help resolve a deeply tragic situation reaching an overdue breaking point.

Brody’s comments quickly drew sharp reactions from colleagues and collaborators associated with the series, highlighting a clear divide in perspectives. Appearing on an October episode of the Not Skinny but Not Fat podcast hosted by Amanda Hirsch, series creator Erin Foster addressed the tension directly. Foster, whose own personal journey converting to Judaism before marrying her husband inspired the premise of the show, took a diplomatic yet clear stance. She compared the dynamic on set to a household dinner table where loved ones openly debate, air disagreements, and hold contrasting views while maintaining personal relationships. While confirming her affection for Brody as a lead actor, Foster made it clear that she fundamentally disagreed with his characterization of the conflict. She emphasized her commitment to the show’s Jewish audience, reinforcing that the series was created specifically as a positive, affirming showcase of Jewish faith and heritage during a period marked by rising hostility and limited positive depiction in popular media.

Veteran actress Tovah Feldshuh, who plays Brody’s mother in the series, offered a much harsher rebuke during an October interview with the New York Post. Feldshuh strongly condemned high-profile public figures who describe Israel’s military actions as genocide, labeling the assertion wild and comparing the rhetoric to historical anti-Semitic tactics that invert roles between victim and aggressor. She emphasized that when Jewish public figures make such declarations, it carries significant weight and consequence within the broader Jewish community. Feldshuh framed the survival and stability of Israel as vital not only to the Jewish diaspora but to democratic stability worldwide, noting that the alliance between America and Israel is mutually essential.

Rabbi Steve Leder, who served as an expert rabbinical advisor to Brody to help ground his portrayal of an authentic modern rabbi during the first season, also took to social media to respond. In a video message published to Instagram on September 29, Leder addressed Brody directly, calling the actor’s statements truly shocking and flatly rejecting the assertion that a genocide is taking place in Gaza.
