LeBron James Opts In for Year 23, Extends Lakers Run with Bronny

LeBron James is running it back—again.

The 40-year-old NBA icon officially picked up his $52.6 million player option with the Los Angeles Lakers, setting the stage for his 23rd season and perhaps the final chapter of one of the greatest careers in league history.

LeBron’s decision follows weeks of speculation about potential retirement or a possible restructured deal. Instead, he’ll return to the Lakers at full price, keeping their cap space tight but maintaining stability in a franchise that just welcomed his son, Bronny James, to the roster via the 55th overall pick.

This will mark the first time in NBA history a father and son share the floor as teammates—something LeBron has openly dreamed of for years. With the Lakers hiring former sharpshooter JJ Redick as head coach, the franchise is clearly building with LeBron’s vision in mind.

The question now becomes: can the Lakers contend?

Last season saw LeBron average 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds on 54% shooting across 71 games—historic production for his age. But the Lakers were ousted early in the playoffs, exposing their lack of depth and inconsistencies on both ends.

With limited financial flexibility this offseason, the Lakers are banking on player development and chemistry, rather than major free agent additions.

LeBron hasn’t committed beyond this season, but a farewell tour could be in play for 2025–26. If the Lakers make a deep run or win a title, he could walk away with a storybook ending. If not, a pay cut or even a short-term shift to another team isn’t out of the question.

For now, though, the King is staying put. Year 23. First time with his son. New coach. Same mission.
