Darren Waller Comes Out of Retirement, Traded to Dolphins

The former Giants and Raiders standout Tight End has decided to return to the NFL, reversing his June 2024 retirement announcement and reigniting his football career. In response, the New York Giants have traded Waller to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick. Miami also receives a conditional 2027 seventh-rounder.

Waller’s initial retirement was sparked by a growing passion for music and a desire to step away from the grind of the game. But after some time away, and reportedly a strong interest in joining the Dolphins, he’s ready to suit up again. It didn’t take long for both sides to make it happen.

His stint in New York was underwhelming, marred by injuries and inconsistency. He finished the 2023 season with 52 catches for 552 yards and just one touchdown over 12 games. But prior to that, Waller built a reputation as one of the most dynamic tight ends in the league, especially during his Pro Bowl season in 2020 with the Raiders.

Now in Miami, Waller joins one of the league’s most explosive offenses. With Tua Tagovailoa at quarterback and Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle stretching defenses deep, Waller could thrive in the middle of the field. He also fills an immediate need at tight end after the Dolphins dealt Jonnu Smith to Pittsburgh earlier this week.

For Miami, this move is low-risk, high-reward. Waller adds veteran leadership and pass-catching versatility at a position where the Dolphins lacked depth. For Waller, it’s a chance to revive his career on a contender and potentially play a key role in a playoff push.

Waller’s journey has been anything but linear. Overcoming substance abuse, becoming an All-Pro, battling through injuries, and now returning from a short-lived retirement. If he’s truly all-in, Miami may have just added one of the most impactful mid-summer acquisitions in the league.

Training camp is just weeks away. Waller will arrive with a fresh mindset, a new jersey, and plenty to prove. The Dolphins’ offense just got a little scarier.
