Historic First: NL Wins All-Star Game in First-Ever Swing-Off

For the first time in MLB’s 95-year All-Star history, the game wasn’t settled on the diamond—it was decided in a three-swing swing-off.

After a 6–6 tie through nine innings at Truist Park, each league selected three hitters, who each received three swings to hit as many homers as possible. The American League’s team included Brent Rooker, Randy Arozarena, and Jonathan Aranda, combining for three total homers. For the National League, it was Kyle Stowers, Pete Alonso, and the man of the night, Kyle Schwarber.

After Stowers logged one long ball, Schwarber stepped up—and with three swings, hit three homers, delivering a 4–3 swing-off victory and a 7–6 final score. It marked the NL’s second All-Star win in three years, snapping a nine-game AL streak.

Schwarber’s performance wasn’t just clutch—it was MVP‑worthy: he became the first non‐pitcher to earn that honor with zero regulation hits. And despite the unconventional finish, players and fans loved the moment. AL manager Aaron Boone summed it up perfectly: “It’s like Wiffle Ball in the backyard”—a “funky” but wildly fun way to decide a game.

With the successful debut of the swing-off—and even real-time testing of automated ball-strike systems—MLB just reminded fans that innovation and baseball tradition can coexist. This unforgettable ending might not be followed by extra innings again, but it certainly left a lasting mid-summer spark.
