The New York Knicks have stunned the NBA world, clinching their first championship since 1973 after a remarkable playoff surge. This historic title, however, is already casting a shadow over their offseason plans, as owner James Dolan has publicly stated his reluctance to operate within the second tax apron for the upcoming 2026-27 season. This stance immediately raises questions about the team’s ability to retain key role players who were instrumental in their championship run.
The Knicks’ path to the title was far from conventional. After a 53-29 regular season that secured them the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference, they were considered a second-tier contender. Their first-round series against Atlanta saw them drop two of the first three games, leading to doubts about their championship aspirations. However, a historic turnaround followed, as the Knicks rattled off 11 consecutive playoff victories, setting a league record for margin of victory in the process, to reach the NBA Finals.
Despite being underdogs against the Spurs in the Finals, the Knicks showcased incredible chemistry and playoff experience. Head coach Mike Brown, who faced scrutiny after replacing Tom Thibodeau following a successful 2024-25 season, proved to be the right man for the job, making crucial adjustments that led to a thrilling five-game series victory.
The foundation of this championship team was meticulously built by President of Basketball Operations Leon Rose. Jalen Brunson was acquired in a masterful free-agent signing in 2022. The rest of the starting lineup, comprising Josh Hart, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, and Karl-Anthony Towns, was assembled through a series of shrewd trades over the past few seasons, albeit at a significant cost of draft picks and former key players.
With their championship core – Brunson, Hart, Anunoby, Bridges, and Towns – all under contract for the foreseeable future, the team’s nucleus is secure. However, Dolan’s pronouncement about avoiding the second tax apron presents a significant challenge. This financial constraint could force the Knicks to make difficult decisions regarding their valuable bench contributors who played vital roles during their championship journey. The coming weeks will reveal whether Dolan’s financial strategy will dictate the team’s roster moves or if a change of heart will allow New York to fully capitalize on their newfound championship status.
